What is a SCY to LCM Conversion?

A 25-yard pool and a 50-meter pool change how a race is swum. In SCY you cover more walls and push off more often, so swimmers are typically a little faster than in a 50-meter pool. Because a meter is also longer than a yard (about 91.44 cm), the same nominal event takes longer on the meter scale.

This converter applies the widely used factor method: it scales short-course yard seconds to meters and then adds a per-turn adjustment (0.8 s per extra turn in freestyle, 0.6 s in backstroke, 1.0 s in breaststroke, 0.7 s in butterfly, 0.8 s in medley) that grows with distance.

Distance events are paired to their usual equivalents: 500 Free converts to 400 Free, 1000 Free to 800 Free, and 1650 Free to 1500 Free. All results are estimates — different conversions can differ by a few tenths.

How do you convert SCY to LCM times?

The converter multiplies the SCY seconds by a yard-to-meter factor of 1.11, then adds a stroke- and distance-based turn adjustment for the far smaller number of turns in a 50-meter pool.

What is the SCY to LCM conversion factor?

The base factor is 1.11, with event-specific adjustments on top. Long distance freestyle uses its own factors — 0.8925 between 500y/400m and 1000y/800m, and 1.02 between 1650y/1500m.

Do 500, 1000 and 1650 yard events convert to different events?

Yes — they are raced at different meter distances. A 500-yard freestyle converts to the 400-meter freestyle, the 1000-yard to the 800-meter, and the 1650-yard to the 1500-meter.

Why are LCM times slower than SCY times?

A 50-meter pool has half as many turns as a 25-meter pool. Each turn in short-course swimming gives a small time advantage from the wall push-off, so the same swimmer is usually faster in yards.
