What is a SCY to SCM Conversion?

SCY and SCM are both swum in 25-length pools, so the turn count for any event is the same — what changes is the length itself. A 25-yard lane is about 91.44 cm per yard, so a 100 Free in yards is 91.44 m while a 100 Free in meters is a full 100 m.

Because the pools have the same number of turns, the conversion is almost purely a distance scale: the calculator multiplies short-course yard seconds by 1.11 to reach the short-course meter equivalent. Long distance freestyle uses its own pairing factors for 500↔400, 1000↔800 and 1650↔1500.

This SCY → SCM conversion is the most commonly requested swimming conversion because U.S. meets (SCY) and international short-course meets (SCM) both happen through the winter season. Remember the result is an estimate, not an official time.

What is the SCY to SCM conversion factor?

The standard factor is 1.11 for near-identical events, because a 25-yard lane is shorter than a 25-meter lane. Distance freestyle events use their own pairing factors (0.8925 and 1.02).

Why are SCY and SCM times different if both pools are short course?

The pools have the same number of turns, but a meter is longer than a yard. A 100-yard race covers 91.44 m while a 100-meter race covers a full 100 m, so SCM times are naturally slower.

Is a 500 yard freestyle the same as 400 meters or 500 meters?

A 500-yard freestyle converts to the 400-meter freestyle (SCM). International short-course competition swims the 400, 800 and 1500, not the 500, 1000 and 1650.

Do U.S. swim times count in international short-course meets?

That depends on the meet. Many meets accept converted times, but organizers apply their own conversion rules — always check the entry information for the event you are targeting.
